Take one, pass the rest back.
The first five people to respond to this post, will get some form of art, by me, about them. I make no guarantees about quality or type, but I will assure that I will give it good effort and that the art will be individual to you, so if you get a mixed CD or some sort of painting doodle, yours is the only one like it.The only catch, of course; as with most memes, if you sign up, you have to put this in your own journal as well.
Gettin’ nerdy with it.
So work has been pretty interesting lately… I’ve been doing a little bit of everything, and not a whole lot of training related stuff. I’ve produced a few Product Vendor DVDs (anytime a vendor would visit and give presentations, we’d tape it, and then I’d take it from there)… and have been learning databases on the fly. I bought a book on Access, and have been elbow deep in creating a learning management system. I’ve done about 8 forms, just about as many queries and reports, with a TON to go. I’ve actually been getting help thanks to Google – between my Google searches and groups.google.com, I’ve gotten pretty far, and am suprised that I can grasp it so well. I’ve always had problems trying to wrap my head around databases, but for some reason it seems to be coming to me pretty easy.
While some of my friends might give me grief that its Access and not mySQL — hey, at least I’m getting it under my belt, and it will let me jump into the stuff I should know.
Other than that, I’ve been working my butt off and today I actually felt like I was having fun at work. Which is probably the second time in the almost 2 months I’ve been in this position. I guess its not too bad.
As a matter of fact, our company celebrated its anniversary, and as a gift, the founders gave everyone a bonus check. Can’t beat that.
Where does the time go?
Please note this was started quite some time ago, I’m posting it as it is so you have some sort of idea of whats been going on with me, mmmmkay?
Wow, a lot has happened since the last time I said hello to you all — let’s get a real quick overview, shall we?
4th of July – This year we ran 3 fireworks stands. You read correctly, three of them. Major crazyness. I’m very proud to say I really only had one blow up (pardon the pun) and that was short lived. To stay with the 3 theme – we had one stand broken into 3 times. They were scared off the first time, the second time, we weren’t so lucky, we lost about $500 worth of product, and the third time there wasn’t anything in the stand to steal.
I will also be starting the third week of my new job. The commute is what really kills me. 45 minutes each way. I can get 3 round trips before I get paranoid and refill the gas tank (at about $40 a fill-up) so I spend half a day a week working to pay for fuel. I’m sure my company does not have a policy regarding blogging, but since they are a publicly traded company, I will stick to the safe side and not name names or really even talk much about it here. I don’t need to be someone who loses a job because of a comment I made on this goofy little blog. What I will do is tell you what I’m doing. I work in the Training department, updating intranets, and other little training related projects here and there. Its a great job, but as I started to say, its the commute that kills me. I do download the Don and Mike show Podcast, so I enjoy that, but there are only so many to listen to. If you know of a good podcast to listen to I’m more than open to them. I would prefer something funny
Not all customer service is good…
So I was at the printer yesterday to have a few signs for the fireworks stands made. (Yes, I do a bit of everything… this year we have 3 stands) I went into the local print shop that can do large format printing, and walked up to the counter. Now the normal person I work with I have a great raport with, and I have no problems. Well there was someone who obviously didn't work with people that often who was working the counter. I walked up and started talking about what I needed. Normally I'll write down the file names, and what I needed done, but I had to work and was running late and didn't do so, so I was trying to describe it as best I could.
Needless to say, she made me feel like I had no idea what I was doing and that I had never walked into a place like that before. On the contrary. I do layout and design for a living. I've worked with bigger companies than them – I worked in a print shop in high school. I live for the smell
I ended up thanking her for her time, and told her I would take my business elsewhere, took my CD and left. I have a friend with a plotter who could do the work for me, but I don't like asking those kinda favors (though it should be ok, since I host him for almost nothing).
Well, I forgot that I had sent a file earlier that day via their website, and got a call from my regular person asking about the job, and I proceeded to tell her what happened, and that while I'm sure that I'll continue to use them in the future, they had lost today's business for sure.
While I was at work at my other job, I had gotten a voicemail from the company. Turned out it was the person at the counter at the time – and they apologized. Totally out of left field. It was actually kinda nice. Granted, they still won't get this job, but hey, at least I won't be totally against using them in the future.
You know you are popular at work…
I have a part time job as a call center employee – its inbound, so I'm not one of those people who call out and annoy you at dinner time…
Well, needless to say, I got a call from the Call Center's manager today, asking why I had not applied for a promotion, and I had replied that I was waiting for a response to another position, and I was told I should really apply for this job too.
I think its pretty slick that they like me there enough to tell me that I REALLY need to apply for a job.
The ONLY reason I’d watch G4.
Since they pillaged TechTV for their viewers and tore everything down, I really have no interest in G4. Well, until now. I was flipping through the channels, and it seems that G4 will start running Episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Trust me, I won’t stick around for anything else.
Hello, World Redux
So Mr Moore told me I really needed to start using my WordPress.com account, so I will. Welcome back to DigitalDrivel. MY little place on the interwebs for random schtuff.
